Africa's leading publishing group, Media24, is putting its weight behind mother-tongue literacy by backing GreaterGood SA’s Donate-a-Book campaign. As the campaign’s main sponsor, the group is also getting its staff fired up about literacy by running a Donate-a-Book employee volunteering drive.
“As a publisher, books and literacy are obviously very close to our hearts,” says Adrie Jurgensen, Media24’s CSI Manager. “And we know that young South Africans desperately need access to books in their mother-tongue, if they are to become literate, productive members of society. That’s why it makes so much sense to us to support the Donate-a-Book campaign.”
Donate-a-Book is an opportunity for book lovers to buy new mother-tongue story books for needy pre-schools or early childhood development centres at www.donateabook.co.za.
Moved by the stories of the early learning centres that will benefit, Adri wanted to find other ways for Media24 to get involved: “When I learned about some of these places, where children are growing up without access to books and reading, I thought it would be an ideal opportunity to get our staff involved on the ground – delivering books, reading to the children and helping to upgrade the early learning centres.”
Media24’s backing is a considerable boost to the campaign which aims to promote literacy and the joy of reading in communities without access to books.
